To make perfect borders:
  • Measure the length of your quilt on both sides and in the middle.
  • Take the average... if the 3 measurements are 80", 80 1/2" and 80 1/4", the average is 80 1/4"
  • Cut 2 pieces of the border fabric the average length by the width you want the border. It's best if you can cut the length along the grain (salvage edge - cut off the salvage) of the fabric. If you need to piece the border, use either a straight seam or a 45-degree angle seam.
  • Fold each of the border pieces in half (lengthwise) mark middle point with pin. Fold in half again and mark each of the quarter points. You should now have three pins in each of your borders.
  • Fold your quilt and pin the same way as you did the borders.
  • With right sides together match each set of the pins and pin border to quilt at each point and again at the end of the border.
  • You may have to "ease" the border or the quilt between the pinned areas.
  • After you sew each of the lengthwise borders on, measure for the top and bottom borders. (This measurement will include the two borders you just sewed on.) Follow the same steps.
  • Press seams toward borders.
